Obituary

Herbert “Herb” Grady Hendrix, 82, of Tifton passed away peacefully Thursday, February 8, 2018, at his residence. His funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2018, at Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church with Father Lonnie Lacey officiating. Mr. Hendrix will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 5:00 to7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Born September 9, 1935 in Forsyth County, Mr. Hendrix was the son of the late Holley Hendrix and Bertha Mary Mae Roper Hendrix. Before retiring, he was Superintendent of Cobb County Parks and Recreation and Golf Coach at ABAC. He was a member of Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church and the Tifton Elks Lodge. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War.

Herb’s positive outlook on life and sense of humor were just some of the characteristics that made him who he was. He loved life and was always bringing smiles and laughter to those around him. One of the things he most enjoyed was mentoring and coaching.

Herb brought collegiate golf back to ABAC in the Fall of 2005 after a 10-year absence. He was named NJCAA Regional XVII Coach of the year in Men’s Golf Division II in 2012 and, that year, brought home the Region Championship Title.

Herb gladdened the hearts of many and will be missed dearly. While we are saddened by his loss, we are joyful for a life well lived. In his own words, “I’ve had a heck of a run and enjoyed my life to the fullest.”

Mr. Hendrix is survived by his wife, Karen Palmer Hendrix of Tifton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Josh and Lana Hendrix of Tifton, Herb Hendrix Jr. and Sharon Yeager of Kennesaw and Brandon and Courtney Goins of High Point, North Carolina; three daughters and sons-in-law, Katie and Joey Cuellar and Kelly and William Bowen, all of Tifton and Nancy and Don Loyd of Cedartown; grandchildren, Sara Katherine Bowen, Megan Bowen, Anna Bowen, Hunter Nichols, Chase Bennett, Hollie Bennett, Abbigail Hendrix, Mattie Mae Hendrix, Kallon Goins, Madison Goins, Kaylee Goins and Heather Leigh Hendrix; and a very special niece, Wynette Hutson and her husband, Sammy of Atlanta.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to a charity of choice.
