Obituary

John D. O’Neil of Andover, MA, and Southport, ME passed away on January 30th, 2018 at Maine Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born on March 4, 1935, the son of John O’Neil and Madeline Winslow in Plymouth, NH. He attended school in Pittsburg, NH, and later in Biddeford, ME, graduating from Lewiston High School in Maine. John served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959, stationed in Napoli where, he said in retrospect, his Latin courses from high school helped with the Italian language. Following his Naval duty, he attended Mt. Ida College and graduated from The University of Maine Orono. After college he worked at the Pinette Funeral Home in Maine. He later moved to Andover, MA where he was employed with New York Life. John worked as an advertising salesman at the Andover Townsman and as a sales manager at the Wilmington Town Crier for the next 25 years. During his free time before and after retirement he enjoyed gardening, acquiring jewelry and going to yard sales. The old treasures and furniture obtained from these yard sales, he spent many hours refinishing and repairing.

He leaves his wife of 33 years, Carol Lewis O’Neil, of Andover MA and Southport ME. He also leaves his step son, Dr. Cary Caldwell and his wife, Karen Kassap and step grandchildren, Myles, Samuel, and Naomi Caldwell, all of Woodbridge, CT. He is also survived by his step daughter, Jana Caldwell of Boothbay Harbor and husband, JH Russell,
and step grandchildren Markus and Ryan Russell. He leaves his brother, Stephen O’Neil and wife Gigi of Treasure Island Florida, a daughter Deidre, who resides in Florida, and another daughter, Kate, who resides in Maine. He is predeceased by his son, John O’Neil, Jr.

Funeral arrangements are by Burke-Magliozzi of Andover. Calling hours will be Saturday, February 10th from 11-1 at Burke-Magliozzi funeral home and a reception will be held at the Christ Church Parish Hall in Andover following.
