Captain William G. Gilheeney, USA ret, 70, of Johnston, died Thursday, February 1, 2018 with his family at his side, at the VA Medical Center in Providence. He was the husband of Sandra (Szczepanek) Gilheeney and father of Stephen W. Gilheeney, MD, MMS and the late Melissa Ann Gilheeney.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late William H. Gilheeney and the late Olive E. (Grimm) Gilheeney-Stoner. He had lived in Johnston for the past 43 years. He served in the US Army during the war in Vietnam.
Bill was a nurse anesthetist at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for 43 years until his retirement in May, 2017. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Kelly Gazzerro Post 2812. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan and a fan of baseball in general as well as a New England Patriots fan.
His funeral will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 8:30 am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville at 9:30am. Burial will be private. Visitation Friday 4-7pm. Flowers welcome.
