Mary (Gilligan) Coveney, age 82, of S. Weymouth, passed away suddenly on January 29,2018 after a long, full life. Mary was born and grew up in Weymouth, where she also raised her family of six children. As a single mother, Mary managed six busy teenagers and pursued a bachelor’s degree at Bridgewater State College. An accomplishment for which she was extremely proud. Mary worked for the MA Department of Children and Families in Plymouth for over 20 years as a Social Worker. Mary had relocated to Carver where she lived for 20 years and started a neighborhood watch in her community. Volunteering at the South Shore Hospital Critical Care Unit and NODA(no one dies alone) brought her joy. Mary also enjoyed traveling to many destinations including Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and regular trips to Florida.
A strong and independent woman, Mary will be remembered for the care and compassion she carried with her. Of all that she cared for, shopping on QVC, crocheting prayer shawls, and painting, what Mary loved most was her family and her many treasured cousins and friends .
Mary is survived by her loving children Linda Nagle and her husband Joe of Weymouth, John Coveney and his wife Sherry of Weymouth, Dan of W. Bridgewater, Katie Nagle and her husband Steve of Pembroke, Joe Coveney and his wife Christina of Weymouth and Rich Coveney and his wife Karen of Halifax. Mary was the cherished “Nanny” to her 19 grandchildren and 7 great-children. She was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Dorothy Gilligan, her beloved cousin Sandra Bardwell and faithful canine companion Bernie AKA Bernard Francois.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the pre-Super Bowl visiting hours for Mary on Sunday February 4, 2018 from 12-4pm at the C. C. shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) Weymouth, MA 02190. Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home Monday at 8:30am for a Celebration of Life prior to the Funeral Mass which will be held at 9:30am in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth. Internment will follow in the family plot at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weymouth.
