...Kindergarten teacher for 40 years
CENTERVILLE — Felicia Barney (nee Olasz), 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Phyllis—as she was lovingly called by her family and friends—was born on January 19, 1945 in Dorchester, MA, one of four daughters of the late Edward and Sophie Olasz.
After graduating from Boston State Teachers College and earning her Masters Degree from Northeastern University, Phyllis taught in elementary education and special needs for over 40 years, retiring after three decades dedicated to her students at the Ezra H. Baker Elementary School in Dennis, MA.
Phyllis was a voracious reader and a frequent visitor to the Marstons Mills Public Library. She taught her love for literature to her daughter Sarah and her grandson Samuel, with whom she spent much of the last ten years in New York City, Boston, and, recently, Madrid, Spain. She also spent precious time with her new baby grandson, Jesús Maximiliano, in Brooklyn and Madrid.
She will be remembered for her passionate commitment to teaching and her students, along with her love and devotion to her family. Those who knew her will forever cherish the memory of her brilliant red hair, radiant smile, quick wit, and nurturing spirit.
She leaves a daughter, Sarah Barney Diaz and her husband Jesús of Madrid, Spain; her beloved grandsons, Sam and Max; her sister, Irene Olasz of Centerville; her step-sons, James Barney of Tuscon, AZ, Tyler Barney of CT, and Eric Barney of Bridgewater, MA; her niece, Paula Riggi of Sarasota, FL; her brother in law Paul Morrison of Billerica and was preceded in death by her sisters Regina Morrison and Alice Horowitz.
Memorial visiting hours Monday, February 5, from 4:00 until 7:00pm at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Rd. Marstons Mills, Ph. 508 428 5704. Her Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady Of Victory Church, ?230 So. Main St., Centerville. Burial will be at Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Marstons Mills Public Library, Children's Room, PO Box 9, Marstons Mills, MA 02648 will be appreciated.
