Mrs. Mary Welch Glisson, 90, dearly devoted widow of the late William Jacob Glisson, Sr., left her earthly home to be with her Lord and Savior in her eternal Heavenly home on January 28th, 2018 at Augusta University Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 1, 2018 in the chapel of Warren Baptist Church with Dr. David McKinley and Rev. Dave Dillard officiating. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mrs. Glisson was born in June 1927 in Augusta, Georgia. She grew up in the area known during those years as Frog Hollow around where University Hospital is now located. She graduated from Tubman High School and later worked at Castleberry Food Company and Western Auto before taking a position as Legal Secretary for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, from which she retired in 1969. It was in the very building she worked as Legal Secretary where she met a Naval Recruiting Officer named William Jacob Glisson, Sr. to whom she would be married for the next 49 years until his passing in 2010. Mrs. Glisson returned to school at Augusta College at the age 50 in 1977 and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree with a major emphasis in English in 1983, a lifelong dream. Her most important calling, however, was as a Sunday School Teacher at Warren Baptist Church, where she taught a group of ladies which she lovingly referred to as her “Spiritual Daughters” over the course of 49 years from 1964 until 2013. The “Mary Class” was named in her honor, although she always felt all of the Honor and Glory belonged to God. Futhermore, Mrs. Glisson was a Past Matron of Martinez Chapter #464, Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Glisson is preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil LaGrone, Sr., and oldest son, Stanford Lee Lagrone; and survived by her youngest son, William Jacob Glisson, Jr., who will miss her dearly. Mrs. Glisson is also survived by her stepson Cecil LaGrone, Jr., granddaughter Vanissa LaGrone Campbell (David), grandson Christopher Ryan Bohler (Stephanie), four great grandchildren, two sisters – Jeanette Stewart (Virgil), Shirley Noll (Bill), four brothers – Charles Welch (Julie), William Welch(Wadene), David Welch, and Jerome Padgett(Virginia). She is preceded in death by her brother George Welch, who is survived by his wife Sue. Mrs. Glisson is also survived by twelve nieces and one nephew.
