Obituary

Margaret “Margie” (Burrows) Dower, 90, wife of Group Captain (Retired) Neil (“Dick”) Dower having just celebrated their 70th anniversary, passed on Saturday, January 27th, 2018. Born in Cambridge, England on June 16, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Egerton Burrows and the late Florence (Parsons) Burrows and a longtime resident of both Barrington and then Bristol. She also wintered in Naples, Florida for 25 years until her injuries prevented further visits after 2012.

She was a Helena Rubinstein beauty specialist in England before marrying her husband at St. George’s Chapel in Cambridge on January 15, 1948 and then joining him as was stationed world-wide as a career officer in the Royal Air Force. Shortly after coming to the United States in 1974, they lost their daughter, Jayne. As a way of dealing with this loss, she commenced a period of long service to the Salvation Army in Providence and later worked at Ross Simmons in Barrington.

Margie is survived by her husband and leaves two sons, Stuart M. G. Dower of England and Richard P. Dower of Warren, a daughter, Elizabeth J. C. Munro, also of Bristol and was predeceased by a daughter, Jayne Dower. She also has three siblings who survive her: William Burrows, Rita Wetton and Elizabeth North all of England and a sister Josephine Portwood, who predeceased her. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Nicola Collingwood, Laura Rivers, Kyle Sampson and Michael, Russell, Chantelle, Victoria, Timothy, Jack and Dylan Dower, two great-grandchildren: Alice and James Collingwood and a nephew, Charles Knowles.

She struggled bravely with intense pain from numerous afflictions these past five years. Despite the knowledge that they will miss this lovely, charming and courageous lady intensely, her family takes comfort in the knowledge that now there is no more pain and that she rests in peace. May God bless her and also bless her caregivers these past five years from the Newport & Bristol County Visiting Nurses Association (in particular Carrie, Matt and Mirrisa) and her care from Christina and Crystal from Beacon Hospice. She would want that special thanks be noted for her daughter Liz and her husband Rocky for providing her a gracious, caring and loving home these past few years.

A funeral service shall be conducted at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington on Saturday, February 3rd at 11am. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, the family would sincerely appreciate that you consider a donation to the Salvation Army in Providence.
