Obituary

Ruth V. Harley, formerly a resident of Sandwich, passed away on January 27, 2018 at Stafford Hill Assisted Living in Plymouth at the age of 95. Her husband, Ralph K. Harley, Jr., predeceased her in 2007.

Ruth was the daughter of Bernard and Mary Hall. She was raised in Whitman and graduated from Whitman High School. She then went to Simmons College where she graduated with a medical secretarial degree. After graduation she worked at Harvard’s School of Public Health until her marriage.

Ruth and Ralph married after he returned from service in World War II. During the early years of her marriage, Ruth was a homemaker. When her children were older, Ruth received her certification to teach and was a second grade teacher at the Eames Way School in Marshfield where she taught for 20 years.

Ruth was a talented seamstress, knitter and cross-stitcher. She enjoyed doing daily crossword puzzles, flower gardening, and being out in the summer sun. Ruth was fun, had a contagious laugh, loved music and loved to bake. Ruth was loved by all who knew her, especially her family.

Ruth is survived by her daughters Virginia Zakszewski of Sandwich and Deborah Mackertich of Onset, and by her grandchildren Michelle Harley of Austin, Texas and Davidson Harley of Reno, Nevada. Her son Jeffrey Harley and her sisters Lorraine Smith and Phyllis Ralston predeceased her.

Ruth’s family greatly appreciates the loving care she received at Stafford Hill and by the caring people at Cranberry Hospice. Donations in Ruth Harley’s memory may be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Suite 326, Plymouth, MA 02360.

A memorial service will be held at a future date.
