Eugenia D. (Duarte) Gomes, 83, of Acushnet died January 26, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
She was the wife of John P. Gomes, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the daughter of the late John J. Duarte and Maria (Barros) Lomba, she lived in New Bedford before moving to Acushnet 35 years ago.
Mrs. Gomes was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Acushnet.
She was formerly employed as a stitcher at Eastern Sportswear for many years until retirement.
Mrs. Gomes was a very spiritual person who prayed every night. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband; 2 daughters, Jeanette Petruck and her husband Mark of Easton and Joanie Desnoyers and her husband Ron of Fairhaven; a son, John P. Gomes, Jr. and his wife Ana of Middleboro; 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey Barros, Matthew Barros, Monique Desnoyers and Jacqueline Gomes; a great-granddaughter, Liliana Barros; and several nieces and nephews including John Tavares and his wife Edith of Dartmouth who was like her brother.
Her Funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 31st at 9:45 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church at 11 AM. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, January 30th from 4-8 PM.
