Joao S. DaSilva, age 74, of North Attleboro, formerly of Taunton and Portugal, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Julietta (Dias) DaSilva, to whom he would have celebrated fifty years of marriage in March
Born in St Michaels, Azores, Portugal on January 4, 1944, he was a loving son of the late Jose and Ildebrandina (Sousa) DaSilva.
Joao grew up and was educated in Portugal. While living in Portugal, he also served in the Armed Forces and worked with his father as a blacksmith.
In the 1960’s, he moved to the United States and settled in Taunton. He had made his home in North Attleboro for the past thirty-two years.
Prior to retiring, Mr. DaSilva had been employed as a mechanic for many years at Ryder in Franklin. His family was the focal point of his life and he will fondly be remembered as a “Jack-of-all-trades” who could fix just about anything.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children Carlos DaSilva of Taunton, Grace DaSilva of Portugal, Antonio Vieira of Rhode Island, Ana Pereira of Taunton, Joe Vieira of Portugal and Mario Vieira of Rhode Island. He was the dear brother of Joe DaSilva of Portugal, Durvel DaSilva of Canada, Grace Amaral of Taunton and the late Ernest DaSilva. He is also survived by his cherished 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Monday, January 22nd at 10:00 A.M. in St. Anthony’s Church, 126 School St., Taunton. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Taunton.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, January 21st from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Taunton Funeral Home, 8 Crapo St. (Off Route 140, Tremont St.) Taunton.
