Augusta, GA – Dearing Francis “Frank” Stone, III, 69, entered into rest on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.
Frank was born on November 20, 1948 in Virginia Beach, VA to the late Bernice and Mary Stone. Frank is survived by his wife, Claire Lee Stone; son, Nicholas Fitzhugh Stone (Kristina) of Chicago, IL; daughter, Kathryn Stone Caison (Robert), Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Charlotte Lynn Stone and Graham Fitzhugh Stone of Chicago, IL; sister, Patricia Joliet of Leipzig, Germany; brother, Barry Stone (Katina) of Waxhaw, NC; and sister Karen Strockis (John) of Palos Verdes Estates, CA.
Beloved by all who knew him, Frank was both an avid golfer and philanthropist. He was a long-time member of the Augusta Country Club, Secession Golf Club, Merion Golf Club, and the Augusta Golf Association. He was also a member of St. Georges Hill Golf Club in Weybridge, England. Frank served on the board of Secession for many years, as well as, dedicated his time to the Leveen-Roach Scholarship Fund there. He also volunteered in press operations with the Masters Tournament for over 30 years. Frank started his career as a district manager for Eckerd Drugs, but in 1987 found a different career path as a financial advisor, working first for Robinson Humphrey, and most recently as Vice President and Senior Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch. His depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for his work, family, and others had no bounds. Frank’s generosity was his most defining characteristic. From a simple encouraging phone call to a Christmas ham to helping a young person with finding a job, he was always thinking of others. He was a caring and nurturing husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends around the dinner table. He also enjoyed the simple things in life, a good glass of wine, a big breakfast with lots of butter, Neese’s sausage, a good haircut, a round of golf with friends, and his three miniature schnauzers.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Rd. Chapel with Dr. Joe Bowden officiating. Burial will take place at Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC at a later date. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM prior to the service.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Augusta Golf Association.
