Richard E. Neagus, 89, of Acushnet died January 8, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Alice T. (Caton) Neagus.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late Harry R. and Dorothy L. (Dunham) Neagus, he lived in Acushnet most of his life.
Mr. Neagus was formerly employed by St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford for 47 years until his retirement. In retirement, he worked as a funeral assistant at the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals. He was a call firefighter with the Acushnet Fire department for many years.
He enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren and family trips to the Seekonk Speedway.
Survivors include his son, Richard E. Neagus, Jr. and his wife Marcelle of Acushnet; 2 granddaughters, Kerrie Neagus and Karen Leaver and her husband Scott; 2 great-grandchildren, Sydney and Kamden; a sister, Barbara Przystas of Acushnet; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Horace Neagus and Kenneth Neagus.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 11th at 10 AM in St. John Neumann Church, East Freetown. His family will receive guests on Thursday morning from 8 - 9:15 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, prior to his Mass. Burial will follow in the Acushnet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
