Obituary

CRANE, Robert Quentin Of Wellesley, died, January 5, 2018. Bob Crane, former State Treasurer of Massachusetts: Born in Providence, Rhode Island on March 21, 1926 to Matthew J. Crane and Helen (Needham). Grew up in the Brighton section of Boston, attended the Presentation School in Oak Square and graduated from Boston English High School in 1943. In 1944, he joined the United States Marine Corps, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines Regiment, Sixth Marine Division and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. He graduated from Boston College in 1949 and on September 9, 1950, Bob married Mary Alberts of Allston and together they raised 5 children, who in turn have given them six grandchildren. A member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1957 to 1964, when he was elected State Treasurer until 1991. He also served as the founding Chairman of the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, as a delegate to the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles and as Chairman of the Democratic State Committee. In 1991, Bob became the chief executive officer of Merkert Enterprises, the largest food brokerage firm in the country.

Bob is survived by his wife Mary and their five children and spouses: Mary Lou Crane Ryan and her husband, Robert Ryan (Wellesley); Patricia Crane and her husband, Robert Kozik (Boston); Robert Q. Crane, Jr. and his partner, Pattrapon Binmahood (Wellesley and Silver Spring, Maryland); David Crane and his wife, Mary Beth (Wellesley); and Jeanne Crane (Wellesley); and his 6 grandchildren: Patrick Ryan (New York City); David Ryan (New York City); Matthew Crane (San Francisco); Katherine Crane (New York City); Thomas Crane (Boston); Peter Crane (New York City); and many loving nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers Matthew, Jr, and Edward Crane and sisters Mary Crane Keough and Helen Crane, Sister Bernadette, S.N.D.

Visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St. (Rt.16) Wellesley, on Monday, January 8, from 4-8pm. Funeral Mass in St. Paul Church, Wellesley on Tuesday, January 9, at 10am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in Bob’s memory to the Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley or Catholic TV in Watertown.
