East Harwich, MA - Herbert Lee “Herb” Gardner Jr., age 83, a retired salesman in the industrial gas business, died unexpectedly surrounded by his family on Thursday, January 4, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua after a courageous three month battle with health issues. He was the beloved husband of Susan M. (Qualey) Gardner, with whom he had celebrated a fifty-third wedding anniversary this past September 20.
Herb was born in Andover, MA, in September 1934, one of two sons of the late Herbert Lee and Dorothy (Wannamaker) Gardner. He was raised in Reading and graduated from Reading High School. He and Susan raised their family in Tewksbury between 1965 and 2001, when they retired to their home in East Harwich, Cape Cod.
Herb worked as an industrial gas salesman, and retired from Middlesex Gas and Technology company, serving throughout New England.
Besides being a devoted husband and father, Herb loved candlepin bowling, and was an avid golfer. He was described as a handy-man and craftsman who could fix anything.
Besides his wife he leaves four children, Elizabeth Gardner and her spouse Melissa Mulvey of Tewksbury, Wendy Krugh and her husband Kenneth of Dracut, Herbert L. Gardner III and his wife Andrea (Skinitis) of Ayer, Suzanne Procurot and her husband Scott of Billerica; five grandchildren, Lauren and Tyler Krugh, Kevin and his wife Caitlin Byers, Logan Gardner, Aiden Procurot; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother David L. Gardner.
