Obituary


CORNISH- Bruce Edward Burt Sr., age 65, passed away on January 3, 2018 at his home in Cornish.

He was born in Portland on July 2, 1952, a son of the late Maynard and Doris (Spearin) Burt.

During his high school years, Bruce played varsity football.

After graduating from South Portland High School, Bruce went on to proudly serve in the United States Marine Corps and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. He received two Purple Hearts for injuries he sustained while in Vietnam. He also received a Presidential Citation and the Cross of Gallantry.

After returning home, Bruce began his working years in the construction industry. He worked for companies such as H.E. Sargent, Yankee Construction, and Woodland Construction. He was involved with the management of many large construction projects. Largest being the Pontook Hydro Electric Dam in Berlin, NH.

He will always be remembered for the enjoyment he found in four-wheeling with his wife and sons on Sawyer mountain. The many weekends they spent together on Sebago Lake and deep sea fishing off the coast of Maine. As his family grew to include grandchildren, he took great pleasure in spending time with them both, Imparting them with the many wisdoms he imparted on his own sons.

He is predeceased by Maynard “ Butch” Burt Jr.

Bruce is survived by his beloved wife- Nancy (Tourtillott) Burt; children- Bruce Burt Jr. of Scarborough and Chad Burt and his wife Tiffany of Cornish; siblings- Joanne Mills, Norma McNamara, James “Jim” Burt, Dennis Burt; and grandchildren- Chad T. Burt and Silas E. Burt.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday Jan. 11 from 4 – 6 PM at the Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home, 71 Maple St (Rt. 25) in Cornish. Burial with USMC honors will be held in the spring.
