Fred Horne, (“Dub” to close friends), 79, of Tifton, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 30, 2017. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Joseph Crumley officiating. Fred will be laid to rest at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 2, 2018, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Bobby Hobby, Lamar Brooks, Ron Evans, Dr. William Hornback, Ronnie Gay, Mike McBrayer and Sandy Sims will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Tifton Rotary Club and his Hawk-Eye lunch group.
Fred was born August 11, 1938 and was the son of the late Malcolm Floyd Horne and Mildred Payne Horne. Fred graduated from Tifton High School in 1956 and graduated in 1961 with his bachelor of science degree from North Georgia College. After finishing school, Fred entered the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. If you had a minute, he would be glad to share his military stories of time spent in Germany. After completing service for the Army, he began work with Deering Millken in 1964 in Greenville, South Carolina . He subsequently moved to the new plant in Avalon, where he was plant manager. Fred easily made friends and built many relationships, a trait for which he was well known.
Married to Sylvia Belcher on August 6, 1966, Fred and Sylvia started a beautiful family: two daughters, Kristen (Thomas) King of Tifton, Leah (Jeff) Guess of Valdosta, Gregg Horne of Tifton and honorary son, Shawn Sikes of Berea, Kentucky.
Fred began his career as an agent with State Farm in 1983 and faithfully served the community for 33 years. He was a member of the Tifton Rotary Club and the Tifton Lions Club. He was also a member of Tifton’s First Assembly of God, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. It was important to Fred to share his faith with others. His hobbies were golfing with friends, watching the GA Bulldogs and enjoying his five grandchildren; Jacob Gibbs, Ryan King, Jackson Guess, Anna Grace Horne and Caden Edwards.
He is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Alderman of Adel and Ginger (Phil) Jackson of Columbia, South Carolina, along with many special nieces and nephews.
