Obituary

Denis J. Mooney, 80, of Truro passed away Thursday, December 28th at home, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Carol (Ramey) Mooney.

Born in Truro, he was the son of the late Francis and Agnes (Joseph) Mooney. He graduated from Provincetown High School and earned his Bachelors of Business Administration degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. A proud Marine Corp veteran, he flew helicopters on close combat logistical missions during the Vietnam War. His squadron was tasked with support and resupply, including the delivery of live animals to remote outposts and the evacuation of injured troops.

After leaving the service, he worked in the financial services industry in Boston, but he missed the Cape. In 1970, he returned to his beloved Truro, to work with his brother George, who was already operating Mooney Fuel. Later they started Mooney Fuel and Grain in Wellfleet, which they ran for 24 years. In 1994, the brothers bought the former IGA building on Route 6 in Wellfleet. They subdivided it, renamed it Cove Plaza and opened the Cove Garden and Pet store. Denis and his brother also operated two gas stations in Wellfleet, as well as a portable saw mill, until their retirement.

Denis was Truro’s Representative to Cape Cod Technical High School and a member of the Pamet Harbor Committee, serving both for 20 years. He also cherished his Catholic faith. After Truro’s Sacred Heart Church closed, he became a member of St Peters Church in Provincetown, and attended Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Wellfleet as well.

Denis loved nature! His leisure time was spent enjoying his garden, fishing, hunting and tending to the bird feeders he set up around his yard. He appreciated seeing the wide variety of birds that the feeders attracted.

In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by a daughter, Karen Mooney of Truro, a son, Kevin Mooney of Las Vegas and brothers Arthur ‘Pat’ Mooney of Newport RI, and George ‘Malcolm’ Mooney and his wife Janet of Truro. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Douglas, Karen, Shannon and Aidan Rose of Gansevoort, NY; Elizabeth Mooney, Mark Sammy Janoplis and Mia of South Portland, ME; Susan Mooney, George Young and Livia of New York, NY; Mark Mooney, Penny Leisring and Jack Mooney of Cheshire, CT and Truro; the Peter and Gretchen Krumpelbeck family of Wellfleet; the John Krumpelbeck family of Stamford, CT; the Jane and O.J. DiIulio family of Elkton, MD; the Mary and Tom Bentley family of Griswold, CT; the Karen and Joseph Imperato family of Bradenton, FL; Kathy and Mike Mooney of Sandwich; the Marie (Joseph) and John Tetreault III family of Truro, along with many cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his daughter Ann Lee Mooney, who died in 2015, also by a brother Francis ‘Brud’ Mooney, Jr., and sisters Marguerite ‘Peg” Krumpelbeck, and Dolores ‘Sis’ Rose.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 13th at 10:00 am at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown.

The family appreciates the kind expressions of support from family, friends and Hospice.
