Elizabeth A. “Betty” Lethin of Canton died peacefully December 28, 2017. She was 82 years old. Betty served as the school nurse for St. Johns School in Canton for a number of years before assuming the position of public health nurse for the Town of Canton from 1982 until her retirement in 1999. Betty had a strong passion for helping others which is reflected in her multiple volunteer roles. She served as a board member of HESSCO for over twenty-five years (including service as both president and treasurer), as well as a participant in the TRIAD program coordinated by the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office. Betty’s deep ties to the town also inspired many local volunteer endeavors. On top of being the instrumental cog in establishing both the Canton Food Pantry and the Canton Area Helpline, Betty was an active board member of the Canton Council on Aging since 1986, and an active member of the Canton Emergency Response Team (CERT). Because of Betty's community contributions, she was recognized a number of times by various organizations. In 2008, Betty was recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as one of the state's Unsung Heroines for her outstanding contributions to her organizations and community. In 2011, Betty was named as the Blue Hills Civic Association's Dr. Richard J. Elkort Citizen of the Year. In 2012, Betty was honored by The Canton Rotary Club at their first annual Volunteer Recognition Night for her role as director of the Canton Area Helpline. Betty enjoyed travelling particularly to Japan and spent many summers vacationing in Dennis Port on Cape Cod in the company of family and friends. Betty was the daughter of the late Arthur and Loretta (Lane) Murphy and the wife of the late Walter R. Lethin. Loving mother of John E. Taylor and his wife Susan of W. Roxbury, Terry L. Kraus and her late husband William of Dighton, Marybeth McCaffrey and her husband Gerard of Canton, Paul G. Lethin and his wife Leanne of Canton, and Gerard T. Lethin and his wife Maureen of Quincy. Sister of the late Nancy Mogan. Proud grandmother to 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Dear friend of the late James A. Fitzpatrick Jr., and the late Rev. James J. Hastings, CSSJ. Visiting hours in the Pushard Family Funeral Home 210 Sherman St., Canton Tuesday, January 2, from 4-8 PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 AM in St. Gerard Majella Church 1860 Washington St, Canton. Interment Canton Corner Cemetery.
