Obituary

Veronica E. (Honohan) Carter, 109, a longtime resident of North Easton, died Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at The Pond Home in Wrentham where she had been a resident for the past eight years. She was the beloved wife of George A. Carter, Jr. to whom she was married in 1941 and who died in 1990.

Born in West Lynn on January 21, 1908, the oldest of five children, she was a daughter of the late Robert E. and Mary T. (Burns) Honohan.

While in third grade, Mrs. Carter moved to Walpole and graduated from Walpole High School as valedictorian of her class in 1925. She went on to Salem Normal School, specializing in business, and graduated in 1929.

Mrs. Carter began her career in education in Huntington teaching commercial subjects and also serving as an advisor to the school paper and senior class, and coaching the girls basketball team. In 1932 she accepted a position at Oliver Ames High School in Easton where she spent the majority of her teaching career, which spanned 41 years, retiring as the head of the Business Department. While at Oliver Ames she also coached girls basketball, served as class advisor to many classes, and was a big supporter of the athletic programs, attending many games with her husband.

Mrs. Carter was a longtime member of the Easton Historical Society and served as director and treasurer from 1975-1981. She was also a member of the Professional Women’s Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Mrs. Carter enjoyed photography and travelling, especially to Oklahoma to visit her husband’s family and to their vacation home in New Hampshire.

She is survived by her youngest brother James Honohan of Walpole, two nephews, John Dodge and James Honohan, both of Walpole and her niece Patricia Noyes of Hudson.

She was predeceased by her sister Madeline Dodge, brothers Joseph and John Honohan, and brother-in-law Walter Carter.

All of Veronica’s arrangements will be private including her interment at St. Francis Cemetery in South Walpole.
