George A. Hamel, 91, of Berlin, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the Hanover Hill Health Care Center in Manchester, NH surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Berlin on March 1, 1926 the son of Edmond and Marie (Therrien) Hamel and lived there until he made the move to assisted living in Bedford. George served in the US Navy as a Carpenter’s Mate 3rd Class during World War II. He owned and operated Hamel Poultry Farm and had also worked as a welder at the Berlin Foundry for over 20 years. He was a Marie Rivier Associate, a member of Guardian Angel Parish, the White Mountain Post #2520 VFW and served as an On Call Fireman in Berlin for 39 years, attaining the rank of Captain. He was also very active in the Boy Scouts of America and liked to hunt, fish, hike, garden and travel. Together with his wife Simone, George traveled to all 50 states, several Canadian provinces and cruised the Mediterranean, but enjoyed family and friends at his camp on Lake Umbagog in Upton, ME best. He was a skilled craftsman who built his own home and enjoyed building intricate doll houses and bird houses for his family.
Family includes son Donald Hamel and his wife Jan of Candia, NH; daughter Donna Wentworth and her husband Jon of Manchester, NH; grandchildren Jason Hamel, Kim Solso, Katelyn and Anna Wentworth; great granddaughters Madelyn and Emerson Solso; brother Antonio Hamel of Gilroy, CA; sister Dorothy Robarts of Wolfeboro, NH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Simone (Croteau) Hamel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday December 19, 2017 at 10 AM at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Ave., Berlin on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Donations in George’s name can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 153 Grafton St. Berlin NH 03750.
