Obituary




BUXTON- Mildred Bernice Dearborn, age 93, passed away on December 9, 2017 at The Gorham House.
She was born in Houlton, Maine on December 25, 1923, a daughter of James and Alvretta (Clark) McGann.
She attended school in Houlton and Portland and graduated from Portland High School in the class of 1943.
Mildred worked as a welder at the South Portland Shipyard after graduating as a contribution to the military dur-ing WWII. During the 1950’s, both Mildred and her husband maned a lookout tower in Buxton, searching for warplanes.
She then went on to graduate from the former Maine School of Practical Nursing in Portland.
Mildred was the treasurer for the Practical Nurses Alumni Association, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School at the First Congregational Church of Buxton, a member of the Association of Traditional Hooking Art-ists, the local chapter of the rug hooking known as “The Tin Peddlers”, Farm Bureau, Buxton Grange, Pleasant River Chapter- Order of the Eastern Star, and was an EMT for the Bar Mills Rescue. She was also the secretary of the Bar Mills and Duck Pond School Parent’s Club. She will always be remembered for her love of knitting, gardening, rug braiding and rug hooking
At one time she was employed by the former Buxton-Hollis Hospital and Crossroads in Windham. Mildred and her husband Harlan owned and operated school buses from 1951-1973 for the towns of Buxton and Hollis, which became part of MSAD#6.
She is predeceased by her husband whom she married on August 7, 1943- Harlan M. Dearborn; and her sisters- Beatrice Junco, Phyllis Staples, and Doris Oser.
Mildred is survived by her son- James W. Dearborn of Buxton; brother- Ronald McGann of Norridgewock; and several nieces and nephews.
Burial will be private in the spring at South Buxton Cemetery.
