TEWKSBURY - Mr. Robert Maxwell “Bob” Guptill Sr., age 76, a former Billerica businessman, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in West Roxbury, surrounded by his family, after a courageous ten-year battle with multiple forms of cancer. He was the life partner for the past twenty-years of Dawn Sheehan, with whom he resided.
Bob was born in Lubec, Maine, in August 1941, a son of the late Maxwell and Katrina (Ramsdell) Guptill, and raised in Maine.
After high school, Bob enlisted into the U.S. Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Saratoga, and the USS Roosevelt. Upon his Honorable Discharge he settled in Massachusetts, and for the past five decades in Tewksbury.
Bob founded and operated Bob’s Garage in North Billerica for over thirty-five years. Since retirement, he had traveled extensively by motorhome throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Bob loved cars, and possessed encyclopedic knowledge of make, model, and year of most cars on the roads of America, along with a mechanic’s knowledge of the inner secrets and problems of the cars he worked on during his long career.
Besides Dawn, he leaves four children, Anna Marie Stone of PA, William H. Guptill and his wife Jennifer (Courchaine) of Dracut, Robert M. Guptill Jr., and his wife Jennifer of Tewksbury, and Kevin J. Guptill of Billerica; nine grandchildren, Chelsea, William Jr., Robert, Thomas, Madeline, Sarah, Jacob, Christopher and Erika; a great granddaughter, Evelyn; a sister, Anna Heinlein and her husband Clarence of FL; several nieces and nephews; and was eagerly awaiting the birth of a tenth grandchild in May.
At Bob’s request funeral services were private.
