NEW BEDFORD — Nathaniel F. Hastings Jr. age 97 years, of New Bedford, died Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Bedford Gardens. He was the husband of the late June (Harris) Hastings.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Nathaniel F. Hastings and the late Edith (Brown) Hastings, he was a graduate of N.B. High School Class of 1939.
He worked as a carpenter for 10 years before he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945, the recipient of the American Theatre award, the European Theatre award, the Good Conduct award and the WWII Victory Medal.
In 1947 he married June Harris and was happily married for 65 years. In 1951 he went to work for the Union Street Railway Company as a bus driver for 8 years, foreman for 5 years, superintendent for 4 years, acting manager for 2 years, and general transportation manager for 16 years, spending 35 years with the company. He was a member of Quittacus Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M.
He is survived by his son James F. Hastings and his wife Rachelle (Cote) Hastings, 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Visitation will take place on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford with a service on Saturday at 9 A.M. in the funeral home, followed by burial in Riverside Cemetery.
