Bridgewater – John J. Raftery 92, formerly a longtime resident of Whitman, died Monday November 27. He was the beloved husband of sixty-six years to Agnes M. (Kieran) Raftery.
Born and raised in New York City he was the son of the late John and Mary Raftery.
John was a graduate of the former Power Memorial Academy in New York City and had attended one year of business school in New York City as well.
He was a proud veteran of World War II having served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 and a member of the American Legion of Abington and the Plymouth VFW.
Prior to retirement from Hendrie’s in 1990 and his move to Bridgewater over twenty years ago, John had been resident of Whitman for over forty years where he and his wife Agnes raised their three children.
His favorite hobby was reading non fictional books.
In addition to his wife Agnes he is survived by his children John Raftery and his wife Allison of Plymouth, Maureen O’Brien and her husband Bruce of Whitman and Pamela Kirby and her husband James of Whitman. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Patrick Raftery and his sisters Helen Hayes and Mary Henley.
His funeral service will be held Monday December 4 at 11:00 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St. (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will be held at a later date. Visiting hours will be held Sunday December 3 from 4:00-7:00 PM.
