Obituary

John W. Calnan, 73, of Tiverton, RI died Saturday, November 25, 2017.

Born in New Bedford, son of the late John and Jane (Cafferty) Calnan, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a graduate of Holy Family High School, where he played basketball, and Southeastern Massachusetts University.

John served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 13 years and the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve for 7 years.

He was employed as a teacher in the New Bedford Public School System for 37 years until his retirement.

John was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He loved fresh water fishing, dogs, vegetable gardening and spending time with his daughters and granddaughters.

He is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Clune and her husband Anthony of Dartmouth, and Andrea Paras of California; two granddaughters, Emma and Ava Clune of Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Patricia Simard.

His Funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Burial will be private. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 4-7 PM.
