James Gomes, Jr., 81, of New Bedford died Thursday November 23, 2017 at Sacred Heart Home. He was the husband of the late Theodora A. (Britto) Gomes.
Born in Freetown, the son of the late James Gomes, Sr. and Elizabeth (Gomes) Gomes, he lived in Fairhaven and New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, where he served as a lector and Eucharistic minister. In addition, he and his late wife were active in the East Coast Secular Branch Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Mr. Gomes was formerly employed as an office manager for Eastern Sportswear. He later worked in bookkeeping and inventory control for Chatham Village Foods.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 - 1962. He was a member and past officer of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association.
He is survived by two sisters, Margaret Lopes of Fall River and Lena Barros of Carver; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Linda Pires, Robert, Leroy, Vasco, Daniel, William, and Joseph Gomes.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday November 30, 2017 at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
