Eleanor (Burgo) Duarte of Dartmouth died peacefully at home on October 31, 2017, surrounded by her daughter Jeannine, son-in-law, William, and her long-time and loyal caretaker, Robin Montanez.
Eleanor, the daughter of the late Waldemar Burgo and Eva Burgo, lived in New Bedford most of her life.
She was at 1968 graduate of the Truesdale Clinic nursing program. Eleanor had a life-long career as a registered nurse until her retirement from Massachusetts Old Colony Correctional Center in Bridgewater Massachusetts. She was an avid baseball fan and was known to plan her day around a Red Sox game. Eleanor loved children and was a foster grandparent for 6 years for the children at New Bedford’s Parker Street School.
Survivors include her daughter, Jeannine Pettiford and her husband William Pettiford of Dartmouth, and Monica Vargas and her husband Keith Vargas of Tampa, Florida, and her son, Robert Duarte of New Bedford. Her sisters, Alice Fields of Chugiak, Alaska, Linda Pinto of N. Dighton, MA, and her brothers, Waldemar Burgo of San Diego, CA, Anterio Burgo of New Bedford, MA, Donald Burgo of San Bernadino, CA, Elario Burgo of New Bedford, MA, Maurice Burgo of New Bedford, MA, Marcio Burgo of New Bedford, MA.
She was the sister of the late Eugenia Lomba, Leonard Burgo, an Lester P. Burgo.
A memorial mass and celebration of life will be held on Friday November 17, 2017 at Our Lady of Assumption Parish at 9 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
