Obituary

Alfred “Freddy” Tavares, 81, passed away in New Bedford after a prolonged illness on October 31, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on June 6, 1936 and was a resident of New Bedford, MA for most of his life.

Alfred served in the U.S Army as a Medical Specialist, during the Vietnam War.

He was employed by several manufacturing plants in the New Bedford area. He retired while working for Sheppard’s Clothing in 2001.

Alfred was a loving father, grandfather “Papa”, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle who will always be in our hearts and fondest memories. Alfred enjoyed spending quality time with his family and going on family vacations to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. He was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Celtics.

He is survived by his separated wife, Shirley L. Tavares; his life-long companion, Doris M. Breakell; three daughters, Lisa M. Degrace, Christine L. Tavares, and Tara Raposo; his siblings Kenneth, David, Antonio, Daniel, Maurice, Geraldine “Jaye”, Margaret, and Linda Tavares, Carolyn Dalomba, and Caroline Silva; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was the son of the late Alfredo and Dominga (Pina) Tavares, and the brother of the late Eugene and Stephen Tavares and Rosemary Johnson.

Visiting hours will be on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 2-4 PM at the Saunders- Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. His Funeral Service will take place during the visitation at 3:30 PM. Cremation will follow. For directions and guestbook, visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
