Obituary

John E. Macedo, 85, of New Bedford died unexpectedly Thursday, October 26, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Vivan A. (Tetreault) Macedo.

Born in New Bedford on Christmas Day, son of the late Manuel and Helen (Sheehan) Macedo, he lived there all of his life.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, where he would help the priest at Mass every morning. He was also a lector and the head of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at the church.

John served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was then in the Army Reserve until 1991, retiring as a Captain.

He was a member of the Paskamansett Bird Club, Massachusetts Audubon Society, Healthtrax Fitness Center, the Knights of Columbus and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, of which he was also a Past President.

John enjoyed birding, traveling to many countries and seeing many plays at the Newport Playhouse. He was a very outgoing person and loved talking to everyone.

He is survived by his wife; four children, David M. Macedo, Patricia A. Baumgardner, Susan M. Smith, and Jennifer L. Dias; and six grandchildren, Mathew, Kristie, and Bryan Macedo, Kayla and Jacob Baumgardner, and Treasure M. Smith.

His Funeral will be held on Monday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM. Burial will take place at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday 4-8 PM.
