Fairhaven – Madalena Linhares, age 79 of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at her daughter’s home surrounded by her loved ones. She was the beloved wife of the late Jose Linhares and the daughter of the late Maria dos Anjos (Furtado) and Joao de Melo.
Madalena was born in St. Michael, Azores and had worked as a stitcher for Mar-lil Factory.
She is survived by her daughters, Bernadette Cordeiro and her husband, Jorge and Martha Spencer and her husband, Terrence; grandchildren, Kris, Amy, Cameron and Ethan; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Mia and Benjamin; brothers and sister, Manuel de Melo, Daniel de Melo and Marta Peixoto; her niece Mimelia, whom she loved as a daughter; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was also the great grandmother of the late Jack Cordeiro, as well as sister of the late Joao Pine.
Her visiting hours will be Wednesday evening from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 10:30 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
