Obituary


Charlton - Richard W. "Dick" Scheffler, 76, died Monday, October 16, 2017 at Overlook Health Care Center after an illness.

He leaves a brother, David B. Scheffler and his wife Carol of Cape Elizabeth, ME; 2 nieces, Amy Scheffler and her husband Peter Bershatsky of San Francisco, CA, and their 2 children Charlie and Bo and Linda Scheffler and her partner Beth Parazette of Portland, OR; a nephew, Dana Scheffler and his partner Amanda Lawrence and their 2 children Alia and Reed of White Salmon, WA; Dana's son Elijah; and many close friends including Bates Craver, Bill O'Connell and Frank Lovell.

He was born in Portland, ME, the son of Warren F. and Helena (Anderson) Scheffler and grew up in Needham, graduating from Needham High School in 1959. He then earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Nichols College in 1963. He served in the Army National Guard during the 1960's. He lived in Holliston from 1978 until last year.

Mr. Scheffler first worked at Adamation in Newton and then at Radio Frequency Company in Millis. His real life's work was his dedication first as a volunteer and then as an employee in the Alumni Relations and Athletic Departments of Nichols College for many years before retiring in 2015. He spent a lifetime supporting the college's athletic teams, home and away. One of Dick's favorite times was honoring many students at their graduations with the gift of a stuffed baby bison.

Dick was a member and past president of the Nichols Alumni Association and a former Trustee of the College. He belonged to the Order of Demolay in Needham. He enjoyed golfing, salt and fresh water fishing, playing pool and bowling.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 29, at 4:00 PM in the First Congregational Church of Dudley, 135 Center Road, Dudley with Pastor John R. White officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Donations may be made to the Richard W. Scheffler Endowed Scholarship, c/o Nichols College, 123 Center Road, Dudley, MA 01571. Arrangements are under the direction of Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, Webster.
