Mary Eunice Henson Sumner, 78, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Sunday, October 15, 2017, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at Frank Primitive Baptist Church in Irwin County with Elder Edward McIntyre officiating. Interment will follow in Frank Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mrs. Sumner was born August 11, 1939, in Stewart County, Georgia, to the late Charlie W. & Louise Powell Henson. She worked with Wal-Mart beginning with their opening and retired as the manager of the shoe department. She was also a homemaker and loved to cook. Mrs. Sumner was a member of the Red Hat Society and worked as a substitute bus driver in Irwin County and a substitute teacher at Irwin County High School. She was active in her children’s activities and loved watching her grandchildren play ball. She was an active member of Frank Primitive Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Lamplighters Circle.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Johnny Warren Sumner of Irwin County; her sons: John William “Bill” Sumner & Teresa, Jeffrey Anthony Sumner, and Paul Edward Sumner & Jodi Ott, all of Ocilla, Warren Lewis Sumner & Jaime of Tallahassee, Florida, and Joseph Martin Smith & Deborah of Hahira; grandchildren: Michael & Lacey Sumner, Blake Sumner, Cole Sumner, McKenzie Sumner, Ramsey Sumner, and Ryan Sumner; and a great-granddaughter: Macie Sumner; two sisters: Shirley & Conrad Waller of East Point and Jean & William Hall of Americus; a brother, Charles & Carlene Henson of Preston; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Henson of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Henson.
