Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Mary A. O’Connor, 94, a longtime resident of Parkside Street and Harlan Street both in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield was Called Safely Home on Saturday, October 14, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life at Brookdale Plymouth Beach Assisted Living in Plymouth, Massachusetts surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born in Springfield on May 29, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late James B. and Anna A. (Sullivan) O’Connor. She was raised on Hungry Hill and graduated in 1940 from the High School of Commerce in Springfield. She furthered her education and attended Western New England College. Mary lived on “The Hill” for most of her life and in 2014, moved to the Brookdale Plymouth Beach. She was employed for 44 years as an Accountant and Bookkeeper at the former Monsanto Chemical Company in Indian Orchard. She was a longtime member of the Catholic Women’s Club and a volunteer at the former Brightside for Children in West Springfield. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved sister, Anna Bartlett. She leaves her four loving nieces, Linda Arnold, and Debra Smith, and their families, and Carol Bartlett, and Pamela Bartlett; her loving cousin, Cornelius E. “Connie” Sullivan and his wife, Carole, of Springfield; and their children, James and Debra Sullivan and Kathleen and Gary Breton, and their families. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning, October 20, 2017 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday morning, October 20, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the Mass. Her family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
