Age 92 ~ WWII Veteran
Of North St. Paul
Passed away on October 11, 2017. Preceded in death by loving wife Dolores; brothers Cyril, Clete, Buff; & sister Gess. John started his young adult life in the seminary, until he was called to serve in the military. John was a tail gunner during WWII for the 485th Bomb Group, 830th Squadron flying missions out of France & Italy. His intention was to return to the seminary, until he met our mom. She won. John spent his life as a chemist working for Burlington Northern Railroad, but more importantly, as an example of self sacrifice to all who knew him. John was truly a humble servant. He was always doing for others without wanting recognition. His happiness came simply in being a source of strength & support for all who knew him. Survived by children Tim (Donna), Mike (Mary), Sue (Tim) Butler, Mary (Pete) Rother, Tom (Brigid); grandchildren Megan, Grace, Joey, Sam & Anna Gombold; Andy Gombold; Emily (Jake) Strange, Margaret & Jack Butler; Vince, Lincoln, Bethany, Lilly & Philip Rother; Hannah, Jacob & Molly Gombold; sister Marcella; brother Francis. We are most grateful to "Dad's girls" at HSL. They have been a blessing beyond words to him & to us. Mass of Christian Burial Monday (10/16) 10:00 AM at CHURCH OF ST. AGNES, 535 Thomas Ave. W, St. Paul. Interment Calvary Cemetery. Visitation Sunday 5-8 PM, with Rosary 5 PM, at SANDBERG FUNERAL HOME, 2593 E. 7th Ave., North St. Paul.
