Obituary

Judith (Judy) D. Brayman, 82, of Lord’s Point, Stonington, passed away October 6, 2017. Judy was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Edith M. (Fenton) Durant and Walter W. Durant. She grew up in Old Greenwich and Stamford, and later moved with her family to Mystic, where she graduated from R.E. Fitch Sr. High School in 1953.
Judy married her best friend and soul mate, the late Robert (Bob) E. Brayman in 1954, and settled in Mystic, where they happily raised four children. When her youngest, Michael was just old enough to go to school, Judy began nursing classes at Mohegan Community College, often taking him with her. She earned her R.N. in 1980. Sadly, Judy lost her husband, two years later. She remained faithful to Bob and never remarried.
Judy found strength and rewards in her 36 years of nursing. She began her career at The Westerly Hospital. Next, Judy worked at Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center, where she was quickly promoted to Director of Nursing. Then, she served many fulfilling years at the office of Doctors Morren, Nomizu, & Nelson. Always quick to adapt to changes in technology, in 2009, Judy worked for L&M Physicians Association on the conversion of paper medical records to digital. Finally, she brightened the lives of elderly clients in her work with Seniors Helping Seniors. Judy “officially” retired in 2016.
The compassion, creativity and strength made her a special nurse and a loyal friend to people and animals, especially her most beloved Maine Coon companion cat, Toby. Judy will be missed by all, whose lives she touched. She enjoyed cooking and baking treats for others, gardening and restoring antique furniture. She simply loved relaxing on her deck, on a warm day, reading a good book. Judy was an avid Red Sox fan. She looked forward to her seasonal pilgrimages, with family, to Fenway Park.
Most of all, Judy was a family person who dedicated herself to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Michael Brayman, of Stonington, who was by her side when she passed; grandson, Jason Brayman and his wife Carie, of Little Elm, TX; granddaughter, Amanda Hillyer, and great-grandson, Burke, of Waynesboro, VA.
In addition to her husband, Judy was predeceased by three beloved children, Margaret Hilyer, Robert Brayman and Laurie Brayman, and by her brother, Walter Durant.
A service, followed by a celebration of life will be held at St. Mark’s Church, 15 Pearl Street, in Mystic, on October 21, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private for the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Judy’s memory to the ASPCA (http://www.spcact.org) or the Muscular Dystrophy Association (http://www.mda.org/office/connecticut).
