BRIDGEWATER - Alan Joseph Maher, 79, of Bridgewater died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at home, surrounded by his devoted wife and loving family, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Ruth L. (Auger) Maher for 56 years.
Born Aug. 2, 1926, in Hilton Village, Va., he was the son of the late George J. and Stella C. (Linegar) Maher.
A lifelong resident of Bridgewater, he graduated from Bridgewater schools.
Mr. Maher was a machinist at American Shoe Shank Co. in Avon for 25 years.
He also worked at Independent Nail Co. for 20 years.
Mr. Maher was an electrician’s mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II, having served on the USS Tiondergo in the Pacific.
He was a member of the Vets Club, Knights of Columbus Council No. 488, both of Bridgewater, and the Bridgewater VFW Post No. 2125.
Mr. Maher enjoyed traveling to Florida for the past 15 years, golf, fishing and gardening.
In addition to his wife Ruth, he is survived by his children, Bruce Maher and his wife Debra of Bridgewater, Stephen Maher and his wife Kathleen of Brockton, Kathleen Loja of Halifax, David Maher and his wife Shellie of Bridgewater, Paul Maher and his wife Deborah of East Bridgewater and John Jeffrey of Halifax; his siblings, George Maher of Bridgewater, Florence Southworth of Texas and Frank Maher of Louisiana; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be in the Prophett Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St. (Rte. 18), Bridgewater, Friday at 10 am. Visiting hours are Thursday 5-8 pm. Burial will be in St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery.
