Obituary

SCARBOROUGH, ME - Henry J. “Hank” Souza, 91, passed away peacefully October 1 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Carmen Dussault, his sons Douglas Souza and his wife Carla of Candia, NH, Dana Souza and his wife Kara of Naples, FL, Mark Dussault of Old Orchard Beach, ME, John Dussault and his partner Rex of Wethersfield, CT and Donna Dussault and her husband Michael of Ellington, CT and 11 grandchildren, Cullan, Michael, Keaton, Seth, Riley, Beecher, Baizley, Kirsten, Rebecca, Justin and Sarah.

Hank was preceded in death my his first wife of 43 years Dolores “Del” Souza, his infant son Darryl, his father Henry G. Souza, his mother and step-father Bernice and Anthony P. Arruda and his beloved Aunt Beatrice Robichaud.

Hank was born in Boston, MA on July 13, 1926 and lived most of his life in New Bedford, MA. He attended New Bedford High School until he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II at the age of 17. He proudly served in the north Atlantic on destroyers and troop transport ships and in the Pacific on destroyers and on the island of Okinawa. Following his military service, Hank worked for the Acushnet Company for 45 years until his retirement.

Several years after his retirement, Hank and Del moved to Windham, ME. Following Del’s passing in 2000, Hank met Carmen at the Woodford’s Corner LIFT organization – a widow-widowers support organization and they married in 2002. After moving to Clearwater, FL for two years, Hank and Carmen moved to Old Orchard Beach, ME.

Hank was an at-large member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrew Dahill post in New Bedford and a lifelong member of the Democratic Party.

Hank will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends as a kind and loving man with a memorable sense of humor who was proud of his family, his military service and his hometown of New Bedford.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 am to 11:30 am on October 5. 2017 at the Wilson Funeral Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford, MA. His funeral will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 422 County St., New Bedford, MA at 12 pm. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven, MA.
