DIGHTON - Hazel (Rodrigues) Chellel, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017 on her 99th birthday, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late John Chellel Jr. and the daughter of the late Manuel & Maria Angelina (Catabia) Rodrigues.
Hazel had worked for United Rayon, making nylon, Berkshire Co. as a bookkeeper, Dighton Rehoboth High School as a Cafeteria Worker, and Dighton Nursing Home as an aide and activities director from 1968-1978.
She had been the Treasurer of St. Elizabeth’s Credit Union from 1941-1945 and sold bonds during the war. She was a parishioner of St. John of God Church, a member of its Holy Rosary Sodality for 50 years, and was a C.C.D. teacher there for 42 years. Hazel also was the recipient of the Marian Medal from St. John of God Church.
She is survived by her children: John Chellel III of Dighton, Michael Chellel of New Bedford, Elizabeth Chellel of Dighton, & Helen Saunders (husband Douglas) of Somerset; Hazel’s adopted-daughter: Debora Wagner; her granddaughter: Elizabeth Miranda (boyfriend Jason Benevides) of Somerset; several nieces & nephews. She was the sister of the late Nicholas, Joseph, & Antone Rodrigues, Manuel Rodrigues Jr., Theresa Pieri, Isabel Silvia, Mary Farias, & Palmeda Oliveira.
Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel’s memory to St. John of God Church, Somerset.
Her funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Inc. 1521 N. Main St. Fall River on Saturday at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John of God Church at 10:00 A.M. Entombment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours on Friday 4-7 P.M. www.rogersfuneral.com.
