Obituary

Margarita Lopes, 78, passed peacefully on September 24, 2017 after a brief illness, surrounded by her family and friends.

She was the 12th of 14 children born to Jose and Maria (Vieira) Cordeiro. “Cheaper by the dozen” she would often say.

Margie, as she was known, was a lover – of life, of music, and especially of people. She was kind-hearted and compassionate and a very generous person who would always help those in need. She had a positive attitude and a great sense of humor. Everyone who knew her remembers her with a smile.

Margie worked very hard as a single mother raising two children. She was employed by various fish processing plants in the city where she worked for 45 years until her retirement in 2005.

She is survived by her son, Kevin Cordeiro and his wife Elizabeth of New Bedford; her daughter, Kim Pensalfini and her husband William of Acushnet; a very special young man, Jerin Montrand, 13, of New Bedford, who was her heart and soul in her latter years; and her Godchild Sheila Winters of Florida who spent the last month in New Bedford tending to her care.

Margie was lovingly known as Gram to her seven grandchildren, and as GG to her 11 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by four sisters: Agnes Burgess, Ezilda Vieira, and Dorothy Cordeiro, of New Bedford, and Mary Sylvia of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents and nine of her siblings: Narcizo, Americo, Michael and Joseph Cordeiro, Theresa Mendoza, Anna Ramos, Hilda Harriman, Laura Sylvia and Helen Quinn.

Our family would like to extend a very special thank you to the hard working nurses and aides in the Huttleston Unit at Alden Court Nursing Home in Fairhaven. Margie loved them dearly and referred to them as her “angels.” They lovingly tended to her physical needs.

A memorial breakfast to celebrate her life will be held at the Century House, 107 S. Main St., Acushnet, MA 02743 on Saturday, September 30, at 10:30 AM. Please RSVP by Thurs. Sept. 28th to [email protected]. For online guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
