Mary L. (Lewis) Smith, of Stoughton, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the Braemoor Nursing Center in Brockton. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Smith.
Born in Darlington, South Carolina on December 15, 1918, she was a loving daughter and sister, the eldest of three children born to the late Gassaway Lewis Sr. and Mary (Bacote) Lewis.
Mary grew up in Darlington and was a 1936 graduate of Mayo High School in Darlington. A dedicated homemaker, and affectionately known as Aunt Lena made her home in Stoughton Massachusetts since 1947.
On February 5, 1983, Mary dedicated her life to Jehovah God and was member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Stoughton until her passing. For many years she enjoyed an active share in the field ministry along with her congregation. She attended Pioneer School which helped her in the ministry and even with all the studying she said how much "she enjoyed it!" She also loved spending time with her adoring nieces and nephews; she was a skilled seamstress and also was an avid ten-pin bowler.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Edward Lewis and Gassaway Lewis, Jr. She leaves behind 2 sister in-laws Alice Lewis of Ayer MA and Ellen Lewis of Dorchester MA, several generations of cherished nieces and nephews and a host of friends and relatives.
Her memorial service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday, October 21st at 11:30 A.M.in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 638 Pearl St., Stoughton.
