Colonel (Ret.) Chester E. Marchut

Chester E. Marchut, 86, of 44 Champlain St., died at Elliott Hospital October 9, 2005 after a brief illness.

He was born November 11, 1918 in Manchester to Rose Minkina and John Marchut and was a life long resident of Manchester.

A career Army officer, Colonel Marchut received the Legion of Merit, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with three Bronze Stars, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Philippine Independence Ribbon and Armed Forces Reserve Medal (second award) and served in the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur. He was a graduate of Hesser Business College, the Infantry Basic Officers Course, Ft. Benning GA; the Field Artillery Transition Course and the Field Artillery Officers Advanced Course, Ft. Sill, OK; the Command and General Staff College and the Nuclear Weapons Employment Officers Course, Ft. Leavenworth, KS and the U.S. Army Management Course, Ft. Belvoir, VA. He served as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for the State of New Hampshire for fourteen years and retired from the military November 1,1977. He was an avid golfer, cribbage player and a member of the Intervale Country Club and an active member of the Military Officers Association of America.

His family includes his wife Helena Berdechowska Marchut; daughters, Janice Marchut Conrad and Stephany Marchut Lavallee; son, Stephen C. Marchut; two grandsons, Stefan Marchut Lavallee and Aaron Marchut Lavallee; sons-in law, Peter L. Conrad and Ronald L. Lavallee and several nieces and nephews.

According to Col. Marchut’s wishes, there are no calling hours or funeral services. Burial was at the convenience of the family and donations in his memory may be made to the Cemetery Fund, Holy Trinity Cathedral, 166 Pearl St., Manchester 03104 or to the Visiting Nurse Association, 1850 Elm St., Manchester NH 03104-2911.
