Virginia “Ginny” Battistini Haines, 92, a lifelong resident of Mystic, died Friday afternoon, September 22nd, at home with her family at her side.
Ginny was born in Mystic on Sept 11th, 1925, to Frank and Armandina (Simonelli) Battistini. She was the youngest of three children. She was raised in Mystic and attended Stonington schools. She was a 1943 graduate of Stonington High School. She went on to work at the former Rossi Velvet Mill, and
later worked with her husband Ted in self-employment.
She married Edward “Ted” Haines on Nov 11, 1949. The couple settled in Mystic, where they raised their five children.
In 1959 Ginny and her husband Ted founded “Ted’s Pizza”, Mystic’s first pizza restaurant, and later opened a second location in Groton, CT. During this time, they also owned and operated the former Mystic Bowling Lanes, where Ginny was not only an avid bowler, but she also ran several youth leagues.
Beginning in 1980, Ginny and Ted ran the food service for UConn at Avery Point, which they operated until their retirement in 2000. While at Avery Point, Ginny developed a love for anything UConn.
Of all her passions, her greatest love and enjoyment came from spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children; Philip Haines (C-C O’Malley) of Seattle WA, Stacy Haines of Mystic, Allison Haines (Jeff Sorensen) of Pawcatuck, Patricia Haines Molina (Edwin Molina) of Redondo Beach, CA; and her daughter-in-law, Stacy Bowman Haines-Mayne (Bob Mayne) of N. Stonington; 20 grand-children and 10 great-grand-children.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ted Haines, her son, Steven Haines, of N. Stonington; her brother, Frank A. Battistini, of Stonington, and her sister, Gloria Battistini Riley, of Mystic.
Her family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, September 29, from 4 to 8:00pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 30, at the funeral home at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery.
