Obituary

New Bedford – Russell W. “Butch” Avellar, 64, of New Bedford died unexpectedly October 7, 2005 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Theresa G. (Taber) Avellar.

Mr. Avellar was born in New Bedford, son of the late Russell R. and Elsie (Astley) Avellar, and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was a member of the First Congregational Church at Lunds Corner, New Bedford. He was employed for 25 years as a welder/fabricator by Cape Cod Staging, New Bedford until his retirement. He was a former member of the Paskamansett Lodge, A.F. & A.M., New Bedford and the Fin, Fur & Feather Club, Mattapoisett. He loved hunting, fishing, sports, auto racing, western movies and his dog Brookie.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter: Cheryl A. Freelove and her husband Jody of New Bedford; 2 sons: Richard W. Avellar and his companion Wendy Curtis of Acushnet and Scott J. Avellar and his fiancée Debra Medeiros of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren: Shanon Curtis and her companion Aaron Morrell, Scott Peets and Amanda Peets all of New Bedford; and 2 great-grandsons: Cole Morrell and Chace Morrell both on New Bedford.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend:

A memorial service on Monday, October 10, 2005 at 6:00 P.M. at the KIRBY FUNERAL HOME, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
