Obituary

Jane Tuttle Darling, widow of Edmund Stanley Darling of Waterford, passed away peacefully September 9, 2017.

Jane was born May 18, 1928 in Woonsocket, RI to David L. Tuttle and Margaret Keegan Tuttle. She married Edmund at St. James Episcopal Church in Woonsocket, RI in 1949.

Jane is survived by her children, Robert E. and Marjorie (Cook) Darling of Waterford, James R. Darling and Stella Burgeson of Waterford, daughter Susan and James Phelan of East Lyme and daughter Elisabeth and Webster Grouten of Niantic. Jane is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, Jen and Jeff Pearl, Jeff and Deborah Darling, Brian Darling, Lauren and Mark DeFrancesco, Robert and Darcy Peterson, Michael and Allison Peterson, David and Meghan Peterson, James Phelan, and Webster, Spencer and Austin Grouten. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

Jane also leaves behind her brothers, Jack, David and Alan Tuttle; sisters-in-law Julia, Barbara and Alice Tuttle and Holly Hastings, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Robert, Richard and Howard Tuttle.

For 25 years, she was Administrative Assistant at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Niantic from 1967 to 1993. As a devoted member of St. John’s, she also volunteered as the new Organ Fund Treasurer, Capital Fund Treasurer, Financial Secretary and served on the Vestry.

Jane was a Girl Scout leader in the 1960’s and volunteered for many of her children’s school functions.
She attended Bellingham High School in MA, graduating in 1946 and later attended Mohegan Community College, Connecticut College and Mitchell College. Jane later won a state-wide award for her creative writing.

Her caregivers Michelle Zrakas, Sandi Malley and Una Smith enabled her to enjoy her remaining days at home.

A Memorial Holy Eucharist service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 400 Main St., Niantic, CT on September 26, 2017 at 11:00 to be followed by a Celebration of Life at Langley’s Restaurant, Great Neck Country Club, 28 Lamphere Road, Waterford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 810, Niantic, CT 06357. The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic is assisting the family.
