Obituary

Joseph Anthony Salani, age 89, a long-time resident of Winchester, passed away on September 9, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Leonora L. (Bernardi) Salani.

Born in Cambridge, Joe was the son of the late Anthony and Anna (Emorgini) Salani. He was a graduate of Northeastern University, where he was a member of the Spelling Team. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII. For over 31 years, Mr. Salani was employed as a mechanical engineer at MIT Draper Labs where he specialized in the development of DSRV (Deep Submerged Rescue Vehicle).

He loved golf, and proudly recorded three hole-in-ones. He enjoyed membership at Martin Down Golf Club in Palm City, FL and participating in the twilight golf league at Draper, where he was consistently low handicap. He also loved bridge, squash, and softball, and coaching hockey.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children: Elisa A. Spence and her husband William of Lexington, Joseph A., Jr. of Waltham, Paul L. and his wife Susan of Burlington, Teresa L. Michelson of Lowell, and Diana M. Salani of Winchester. He was also the loving grandfather of Jessica Salani, Adelle, Tiffany and Anna Michelson, great-grandfather of Juliana Mason, and brother of Arthur Salani of Arlington and the late Linda Pierotti.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St. Winchester on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 5-8PM and again on Wednesday at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Eulalia’s Church, 50 Ridge St., Winchester at 10AM. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Winchester Hospital Foundation (in memo ATTN: Oncology) 41 Highland Ave. Winchester, MA 01890.
