TEWKSBURY - Mrs. Yvonne T. (Cournoyer) Sylvia, age 90, a resident of Tewksbury since 1957, died Wednesday, September 6, at Wingate of Andover. She was the beloved wife of the late Alfred P. “Al” Sylvia, who died in 2009.
She was born in New Bedford, in August 1927, the youngest of nine children of the late Flavien and Rosilda (Beaulieu) Cournoyer. She was raised in New Bedford, and had lived in Tewksbury since 1957. Yvonne and her late husband Al were faithful communicants of St. William’s Church. After raising her young family, she became a message center receptionist at Wang Laboratory’s North Street Facility in Tewksbury. She retired in 1986. She and Al wintered in Orlando, Florida in their shared retirement years.
As a devout Catholic, she was a member of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality at St. William’s, and actively supported her husband with his many St. William’s affiliations.
She and her late husband were local celebrities at the Lincoln Park Ballroom in Fall River, and were brilliant together as accomplished Ballroom dancers.
In her earlier years, she and Al were active Ten Pin Bowlers, and in her later years, she was active at the Tewksbury Senior Drop-In Center.
She is survived by two children and their spouses, Steven and his wife Clare (Connelly) Sylvia of Lowell, and Doreen and her husband Stephen Dunlevy of Tewksbury, with whom she had resided for many years; two beloved grandchildren, Ryan Dunlevy of Medford and Kara Dunlevy of Tewksbury; her dearest friends and caregivers, Simona Bertozzi and Rachael Pendleton; many nieces and nephews; and was preceded in death by her siblings, Ora Bernier, Irene Shank, Annette Gehue, Claire Arsenault, Albert Cournoyer, Arthur Cournoyer, Raymond Cournoyer, and Alfred Cournoyer.
Visiting hours Monday morning, September 11, from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. Her Funeral Service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, No. Tewksbury.
