DEREK WEITZ, 46
Derek L. Weitz, 46, of Winchester, MA, passed away on Tuesday August 29, 2017 surrounded by the comfort and love of his family.
Derek was the beloved husband of Melanie (Lindahl) Weitz and the vibrant, loving father of 3 boys Owen (14), Oliver (9), and Noah (6) who love and miss him so much.
Derek was born in Lowell and happily raised in Tewksbury, MA by loving parents Virginia (McSorley) Weitz and Gerald L. Weitz. He leaves behind two brothers, Bart and his wife Kathie Weitz, Mark and his wife Patti Weitz, and a sister, Gretchen Weitz.
Derek’s love of basketball followed him from Tewksbury High School to Emerson College where he graduated with a degree in Communications.
He lived each day in the present and lived life to the fullest. Family was everything to Derek and being a hands-on father was the driving force behind his courageous battle with cancer.
Derek was a cool, handsome, big-hearted, fun husband, son, brother and friend.
He enjoyed the early starts and daily challenges of his work as a general contractor – a talent passed down from his father.
Derek was a dedicated participant of the Winchester Basketball community and a devoted basketball coach for several years – in recent seasons even coached the boys team with a chemo bag under his sweatshirt. But Derek’s biggest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family and being at Cape Cod.
Derek’s family and friends loved him dearly and could not be more grateful to have had the privilege of loving him.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, September 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury. Please omit flowers. Instead, the family kindly requests donations be made in Derek’s memory to the Herscot Center for TSC, c/o Dr. Elizabeth Thiele, 175 Cambridge St. Suite 340, Boston, MA 02114 in honor of his son Oliver.
Derek’s memorial service will be held privately at a later date.
