Charles “Chuck” Thompson, 77, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Sunday, August 27, 2017, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM, Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Mitchell Jones and the Rev. Jeff Parmer officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until the funeral hour on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Thompson was born July 26, 1940, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the late Ralph & Clyde Gilliard Thompson. He was a graduate of Fitzgerald High School and received his electrical certifications through correspondence. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era. He was aboard the USS Gregory DD 802 2100 class destroyer when it was in a collision with the USS McDermott. After decommissioning, he was sent to the USS Topeka CLG-8. Mr. Thompson was an industrial electrician for Delco-Remy, later Delphi Automotive Systems, for 31 years. He was a member of the American Legion and loved wood working and working with tools. He was an active member of Crossview Baptist Church and the Tim Woods Sunday school class. He was also active in the Golden Believers and helped build and hang the cross behind the baptistry in the church.
He is survived by his wife, Elouise Jones Thompson of Fitzgerald; a son, Eric Thompson of Fitzgerald; and a special friend he called Sister, Nabila Covington. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Thompson and a brother, Ronnie Thompson.
