Florence Margaret (Johantges) Chimento, 92, of Windham, NH, formerly of Derry, NH and Westerly, RI, died peacefully on August 17 at Warde Rehabilitation & Nursing Center of Windham. She was the widow of the late Dr. Dominic Frank Chimento, whom she met at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis IN during the war years. After Dr. Chimento returned from Europe (Captain, US Army) and completed his surgical residency, they married in 1948 and moved to his hometown of Westerly, RI where he practiced medicine until his retirement. Mrs. Chimento was a graduate of St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing. In addition to her fulltime duties as homemaker, wife, and mother, she volunteered as a Nurses’ aide instructor at the Westerly Hospital and was involved in community and church activities. She was the daughter of the late John S. and Minna (Saul) Johantges of Montreal. Orphaned at age 9, she was raised in Indiana by loving aunts, Anne, Mary, and Magdalena. She survived her 5 siblings, Margaret, Joseph, John, Dorothy Aird, and Helen Blank.
Mrs. Chimento will be missed by 3 children and their spouses: George & Elizabeth Chimento, of Dover, MA, Anne & Joseph McMahon of Saratoga Springs, NY, and Donna & Michael Clark of Bow, NH. She was a grandmother of 8 (Michael, John, Jane, Kate, Tara, Rachel, Ian and Rebecca) and a great-grandmother of 17 (Madison, Aidan, Johnny, Kyle, Sarah, Gian-Luca, Crystal, Georgianna, Elle-Marie, Hayley, Joseph, Nicholas, Lillian, Dominic, Juliet, Annelise and Makayla).
After cremation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday September 5, 2017 at 11:30 am in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Crystal Avenue, Derry. The burial will follow next to her late husband in Holy Cross Cemetery, Londonderry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Warde Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 21 Searles Rd., Windham, NH 03087. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium of Derry, NH is assisting the family.
