Mary Anderson Wheeler of Mystic died August 11, 2017 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, New London, CT.
She was born on March 25, 1924 to John and Virginia Anderson of Hinsdale, Illinois.
Mary Anderson Wheeler attended Hinsdale High School and the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois. During World War II she served as a Chief Petty Officer in the WAVES. After the war, she was a counselor at the New England Music Camp, Oakland, Maine where she met her husband, Norton Cooper Wheeler, Jr., a fellow counselor.
She was a Red Cross Gray Lady at the Hines Veterans Hospital, Chicago, a member of the Mystic Congregational Church where she taught the first and second grade Sunday School for more than 20 years, a mentor in the Noank Baptist Church Youth Homes program, and a volunteer at the Norwich State Hospital.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children, Anne Wheeler Konczakowski, John Anderson Wheeler, Mary Elizabeth Wheeler, Barbara Norton Wheeler and husband, Clayton Westland, and Norton Cooper Wheeler III and wife, Sandra Wheeler; also, by Mary’s brother, Dr. Roger Anderson and sister, Barbara Danly.
She is survived by six grandchildren, Eliza, Mary, Rachel, Amanda, Mason and Jackson, and eight great grandchildren, Keara, Julia, Josef, Isabella, Caroline, Anthony, Israel and Cloe.
It was her wish that she have a private family service.
